Conclusie

Het enige artikel die een voldoende scoort op methodologische kwaliteit is een systematic review (MacDermid, 2004). In deze review scoort de Phalen’s test op specificiteit gemiddeld 0.73. Het aantal onderzochte patiënten van alle gebruikte studies in de review samen is 3218. In het artikel wordt alleen niet aangegeven om welke samenstelling van patientenpopulaties het gaat.
Een recentere studie is die van Boland (2008). Deze scoorde op methodologische kwaliteit goed en kwam qua resultaten niet veel anders uit dan MacDermid (2004) met een specificiteit van 0.75. Het onderzoek is alleen gedaan bij 43 patiënten die de symptomen van Carpaal Tunnel Syndroom (CTS) hadden.
Beide artikelen hebben de Phalen’s Test gebruikt voor het diagnosticeren dan wel uitsluiten van een CTS. El Miedany (2009)concludeerde dat de Phalen’s test meer sensitief is voor de diagnose van tenosynovitis dan voor de diagnose van CTS, namelijk 0.87 bij tenosynovitis tegenover 0.17 bij CTS. In totaal 127 patiënten met symptomen van een inklemming van de n. medialis zijn gebruikt voor dit onderzoek.
